Ganga Dussehra

Ganga Dussehra is a Hindu festival celebrating the descent of the sacred River Ganga (Ganges) to Earth from heaven. According to mythology, this was made possible by King Bhagiratha’s penance and Lord Shiva’s intervention to control Ganga’s mighty flow. The festival marks the day when the river is believed to have touched the earth, purifying souls and washing away sins.

1. Holy River Rituals
Devotees take a dip in the Ganges at sunrise, believing it cleanses sins and grants salvation.
Major celebrations occur in Varanasi, Haridwar, Rishikesh, and Prayagraj.

2. Puja & Offerings
Ganga Aarti is performed with lamps, flowers, and incense at riverbanks.
Offerings include milk, fruits, and sweets floated in the river.

3. Charity & Donations
Donate food, clothes, or money to the poor in Ganga’s name.
"Daan" (charity) is considered highly auspicious on this day.

4. Fasting & Prayers
Some devotees fast and chant Ganga Stotram or mantras.
Reading the Ganga Sahasranama (1,000 names of Ganga) is believed to bring blessings.

5. Cultural Significance
The festival highlights environmental awareness - efforts to clean and protect the Ganges are promoted.
Inland, people sprinkle Ganga Jal (holy water) in their homes for purity.
